Day 05: The Delicate Subject of Overflowing Toilets

Day 05 — This is embarrassing but on average I cause the toilet to overflow about this many times a year because of deposits I have made…

I wish I could come up with some sort of quirky anecdote about that one time I clogged the toilet and shit went everywhere, BUT honestly, if such a thing happened, I do not remember it.

I have never caused a toilet to overflow!

Call it luck, but if a toilet isn’t working, there has been a sign OR somebody has gone in before me and experienced the trauma, kindly informing me on their way out that it’s best I stay away from the toilet.

I think the closest I got was once, in my own bathroom back home. Not my apartment in New York City, but my actual family home in Long Island. I essentially took over the basement and converted it into my sleep/study/hibernate/live space toward the end of high school. Now it’s my home during the semesters and if I’m commuting to college for a particular semester.

This incident was in high school though. I can’t really remember details, but there had to have been some sort of drainage issue. I went to flush the toilet before I sat down to use it and the water level got dangerously close to overflowing toilet bowl capacity. I thanked my lucky stars [to be living here today] for my habit of flushing the toilet before and after I use it and ran up to call mah daddy. He fixed it, and I went along doing my merry business for the rest of the day.

I think that the real honest truth here is the part where I admit (shamelessly) that I’m pretty spoiled. Not spoiled by MONEY, mind you, because I’m as stingy and thrifty and cheap as they come…but I am spoiled in the sense that I have never had to do much for myself. At home, my parents took care of me. Dishes, clothes, laundry, cleaning, EVERYTHING. All I had to do was get good grades. Which I did!

Now in college, as a senior with my own apartment, I still don’t do much for myself. I’ve helped pay rent, but my parents are paying my tuition and my mom packs me food for the whole week and buys me groceries whenever I go home.

I must say though….the lack of proper drainage in this apartment, especially since the sink has gotten dangerously close to overflowing just about every single time anybody washes their face….I may have to rewrite this post with a funny story about how I flooded my tiny little apartment.

Damnit, I really need to suck it up and buy some Draino.

Next paycheck, I promise!

  1. Oh man, one of our crusty little apartments (in a past life) had the shower drain overflow and that clean up was horrendous. The previous tenants had a lot more hair than we did. BUY THE DRAINO.

    • LOL thanks for the heads up! It’s the sink more so than the shower (thank god) but the fact that its 3 of us girls in here right now, and all three of us shed like MONSTERS…the Draino is probably a good idea. Like, tonight.

  2. When I found this question I was not sure if we would include it, but I’m glad we did. I’m starting to think this is just a man issue although of course it’s never happened to me either! Wink, wink, nudge, nudge!

  3. I still live with my parents and my mom does my laundry. Once I finally move out I’m going to be in trouble. Washing machines scare me.

    • Oh I know /how/ to do my own laundry. The problem is that I’m really lazy and the clothes just sit around in the washer…then the dryer…then the table…then the laundry basket, fully folded….then I just grab things from the top of that pile and don’t put them away until most of them need to be put back in the laundry basket to be washed again anyway. Dishes, laundry, and taking out the trash. I am SO bad at all three.

    • LOL but this was an inherently funny question! Any blog post involving toilet bowl overflow is bound to be funny at the expense of the blogger! But thank you very much for the compliment! I’ve only just gotten out of classes & meetings for the day so I’m going to go check up on everybody else’s responses now!
