Blog Everyday In May – Day 23 – Things I Didn’t Learn In School

Day 23, Thursday: Things you’ve learned that school won’t teach you

One. The shades of grey

Oh sure, teachers will tell you all the time that life is not black and white, but they don’t tell you how to find the shades of grey in between. Only the ethical dilemmas that you will undoubtedly face in your unique lifetime will show you just what shades of grey there are. The ethics discussions you have in school are not very realistic or applicable to how you will act in the heat of the moment, and the line between opposing philosophies is always blurred and often crossed. Only life’s lessons will teach you that.

Two. Excuses don’t work as well in the real world

If you miss an important deadline at work because you fell sick last minute or your Aunt died…tough luck, you may be out of a job. Of course, there are some humans that are more considerate than others, but you will quickly learn that the stakes are much higher when it comes to the consequences of your actions after you’ve graduated and are done with schooling.

Three. Things fall apart

Disregard if you’ve read Chinua Achebe 😉 But for those of us who didn’t apply ourselves to literature, you will learn that life is far from picture perfect. Friendships fall apart, people get busy and can’t always hang out at favorite coffee shops, and most of us will never be famous. Networking matters over grades, and presentation matters most of all.

Four. Money Matters

High school and even college (Unless you are earning your way through) allows students to maintain a very jaded perspective of their finances. Living is not as expensive when you’re living under your parents roof and have a decent job or internship that is covering your personal expenses and partying. Counselors encourage you to take classes “that make you happy” or “do what you feel is right”. They encourage studying abroad and taking the time to pursue your outside hobbies. REALITY BITES. Unless you’ve got money, ain’t nobody got time for that

Blog Everyday In May – Day 22 – Preach

Day 22, Wednesday: Rant about something. Get up on your soapbox and tell us how you really feel. (a pet peeve, a current event, a controversial topic, something your husband or roommate or neighbor or boss does that really ticks you off)

I’ve already gotten on my soapbox once during this challenge, and that was for my Day 16 post where I ranted and raved (Quite unabashedly and probably not politically correct…ly) about how students from lower income level homes receive a biased amount of financial aid where their achievements are weighted more. To recap that if you’re not going to click: Many of these students have lower scores overall but because they’ve done ‘so much’ and ‘overcome the odds’ they receive full or nearly full scholarships to prestigious universities that then deny other students who might have a better college resume, but won’t fit into a minority or quota and get left behind. Or get in and are expected to pay full tuition because they are in the middle class and are expected to be able to contribute more. What ends up happening in that stupid scenario is that the poorer kids with the lower  scores get a rull ride and chance to succeed/blow it off. The middle class kids get sucked into ridiculous amounts of debt or their entire family’s lifestyle is impacted by how much money the family is expected to contribute towards tuition. It sucks – not poor enough for govt help, but certainly not rich enough that paying for college is easy.

It’s like an attempt to reverse the disadvantages of being poor but totally imbalanced in favor of them, thereby disadvantaging the middle class in the process. SO IF YOU WANT TO READ THAT RANT, YOU CAN CLICK HERE haha.

But really, let’s talk about my pet peeves

Gosh, I don’t even know. I’ve worked myself up into a frenzy of rage about the above topic once more just by typing the above 2 paragraphs LOL. I like the suggestion of pet peeves though, so let’s cover my honest and probably mean opinions on certain pet peeves of mine!

Unmatched/Missing Socks – Oh my GOSH this drives me insane. I don’t even know how many pairs of socks I’ve bought over the last few years because it seems like whenever I check my closet, i’ve got like 2 actual pairs of socks left. Then I’m like “OMG I JUST BOUGHT A 10 PACK 2 WEEKS AGO” but the socks are like nowhere to be found. Usually I’ve just got a lot of singles lying around so I always end up regretting not just buying plain white socks so at least I won’t render a pair useless when I lose one. And the problem is that I’m terribly attracted to cutesy non-white socks and always regret it afterwards when I find that all of my pairs are no longer paired with a matching sock. It makes me sad and secretly when I’m wearing boots, I just wear the poor singles anyway since nobody’s looking. HA, so now you know.

Public Displays of Affection (PDA) – Couples that are excessively PDA, especially on the subway since you’re totally confined in a small little train car with them for god knows how many stops. With my luck, they’re on the train till it’s last stop and I suffer through their icky gooeynessuntil I get off.

Bad Grammar, Punctuation, Spelling, Composition, Etc. – As I type this, I realize I could probably just have done an entire post on this pet peeve alone. I like literacy and cannot abide those who act like they’ve never seen a day of school in their life. If you’re genuinely illiterate, well I suppose it’s alright then because you’ve got a legitimate excuse. Even then, you better be trying to learn and improve. But for those of you in college or graduate school still typing “lyk d1s is so KEWLLLL!1!1!” – I HATE WHAT YOU ARE DOING TO ME.

An ocassional error is not what I am talking about. I’m not perfect either and we are humans, I would be sort of intimidated if you never erred in your writing. But purposely misspelling things, leaving out certain letters, etc – that’s the shit I don’t like.

Let’s take some time to pull real FB posts and discuss some beneficial before & afters 🙂

  1. Hey missy how is Ur finals coming out?
    1. Hey missy! How are your finals going? OR Hey missy, how are finals coming out?
  2. The sun teaches us 2 valuable lessons each n evryday:
In d evening- it shows dat evrygr8 thing has 2 fall, &
In d morning it shows dat watevr has fallen, can rise again.
So wen ever u fall, try 2 rise up again. [I AM NOT EVEN KIDDING. SHE’S IN GRAD SCHOOL….]

    1. The sun teaches us 2 (or two) valuable lessons each and every day:
In the evening, it shows that everything has to fall, and
In the morning, it shows that whatever has fallen can rise again.
So whenever you fall, try to rise up again.  [Doesn’t that sound so much BETTER]
  3. 3 idiots….. Best frnds forever
    1. 3 Idiots…best friends forever (Insert end punctuation(s) of your choice here)
  4. …my future BF shuld hold my hand always…coz if he lets go..ima go shopping with his card in my hand.!! lmfao.!!
    1. ….my future boyfriend (or BF or bf) should hold my hand always….because (or cuz) if he lets go, imma (or I’m going to) go shopping with his credit card in my hand!! lmfao!!

Cleaning out my closet

Despite the song choice above, I mean this quite literally.  I HAVE A SHITTON OF CLOTHING

During my Project No Buy over at NailSparks* (The nail art/beauty blog), I challenged myself one week to clean out my closet. Spring cleaning style. Take out things to donate, take out things that are out-of-season, and trash the stuff I know I’m not using because I’ve honestly got SO. MUCH. STUFF.

Here are some pictures of how ridiculous it is. I am not exaggerating!

Getting started by playing my music and emptying out the closet

The pile continues to grow

The wall of clothing is about waist high and has overtaken my poor laptop

Breaking down the wall into piles, separated by type of clothing

Putting things away and starting to see carpet again!!

Give me about a week, the closet will be messy again. Also the weather here in New York has been so MOODY and indecisive lately that I still haven’t put away my winter clothing because we get days like today when it’s back to being in the 50’s/60’s. Then tomorrow it’ll be 80’s, and then the day after, there’ll be a thunderstorm. What fun. Clothing for all weather is still needed haha.

Blog Everyday In May – Day 21 – My favorite posts

Day 21, Tuesday: A list of links to your favorite posts in your archives

Haha this is a hard prompt, I’ve been posting for a long while and going through my archives to pick out a few of my favorite links

My first few links are going to be from another blogging project I did, how fitting! Here are some of my favorites from Poetry Paradise, a little project I did where I wrote a new poem every single day for a month.

Mirror Me –  This was a really angsty expression of how upsetting and frustrating it was for me without any corrective eyewear. I wrote it when I managed to break my glasses and went a few days without, and this was before I wore contacts.

Design Is – This poem REALLY sparked something for me. I later went on to interpret each stanza in a poster, and currently have all 7 of the posters printed and framed on my wall. It was a really big personal proclamation of my absolute love of graphic design

Going through the Archives is sort of difficult/tedious. If I remember a post I was particularly proud, I’ll add it in! Here are some other posts I really liked though!

Going Healthy Lifestyle Rehaul Post – I was just so hyped up about this! I need to suck it up and drop some money on a gym membership with more flexible hours since my LA Fitness guest pass is no longer effective, the gym at work is closed for renovations, and the one I went to after LA Fitness closes at 9PM, which isn’t feasible for me. Things are on hiatus but I need to get back into it.

A Troll Unmasked, V2 – This is one of my favorite stories published on Controlled Derangement, but the fact that it’s also a TRUE story is what really makes me shudder everytime I think about the weird and freaky incident

The “Design Is” Poster Series – This series was a great experimentation in Photoshop and Illustrator along with being a tribute to the Design Is Poem that I linked to above. I love them all even with their flaws and imperfections!

If somebody comes up with some sort of obviously amazing post that I forgot about, let me know! I’ll edit it in 🙂

Blog Everyday In May – Day 19 – Five Favorite Bloggers

Day 19, Sunday: Five of your favorite blogs and what you love about them.

1. Cocoalite – This blog belongs to one of my best friends, Nabila, so you just know it has to be up here. I adore her and her blog to pieces. We’ve been doing it together, this blogging thing, since the Senior year of high school. From Livejournal to here, we’ve traveled the years together and grown together as well. She’s the reason I started blogging and the reason that I continue

2. TemptaliaThis is a blog I find myself visiting every single day. Usually multiple times a day. She’s not as fair-skinned as a lot of other beauty bloggers (That are all in like the NC15-NC25 range, if not lower) so it helps me out a little bit more. Her swatches of everything (lipsticks, eyeshadows, blushes, etc) are divine. Very clear, good quality, consistent, easy to search, extensive ‘dupe’ lists, a foundation matrix to help you find the right shade, etc etc etc. So much perfection.

3. Dark Side Of Beauty – It is not that often that I can say I know for a fact the person behind the blog is as amazing as the blog itself. But honestly, Nancy is one of the sweetest bloggers I know! She takes the time to comment back (Even for lil lowly ol’ me) and also takes the time to check out other blogs of her commenters and comment on them. Truly remarkable of her, and way above and beyond most other bloggers who never reply to their comments, only approve them as long as they aren’t spam. I hope to one day be even closer friends with her because she’s just ‘dahling’

4. Ommorphia Beauty Bar – I am digging her new blog layout and was initially floored by Eugenia’s blog because she ran it on WordPress in the generation of Blogger beauty blogs and managed to gain a massive following without the aid of a precious Google Reader. She began blogging in 2010 and quickly rose all the way to the top. She is the ONLY person I really need to go to for non-indie nail polish swatches. She doesn’t really do many beauty products but she is my staple for all things nail polish, especially mainstream brands like Butter London, Essie, OPI, China Glaze, etc. She’s a huge lover of Chanel so another thing about her blog I love and adore is living vicariously through her Chanel collection!

5. Accio Lacquer – Last on the list, but only because it’s my newest love. Accio Lacquer is just the most fun and quirky nail polish blog I have ever seen. She started out purchasing collections to review but within weeks, she was getting polish by big lines for review because her swatches and posts are that thorough and beautiful. She takes her time formatting and includes hilarious .gifs and memes to liven up the commentary. She loves all things nerdy in the nail polish world, so I always go there to check out nerdy indie polish collections. Like all the Doctor Who polishes by Digital Nails. Yeah, I want them all, and it’s all because of Mishka from Accio Lacquer!

Gosh can you tell that I love how the blockquote tag looks on my blog yet or not? BLOCK ALL THE Q UOTES!
